There was a big controversy over DualShock stuff when the PS3 first came out, but that’s all passed now. So the big question is, do you want the DualShock 3 PS3 controller? Let’s take a look at what’s different about this new version – what it has, what it doesn’t, and what could make it worth your while – and you can decide for yourself.
The DualShock 3 controller now has two rumble packs instead of just one. Each rumble pack is located on opposite sides of the controller, adding a lot of precision to how the controller rumbles when the game demands it. This addition makes the controller about 40% heavier than the DualShock 2, but that’s not all bad; it ends up a lot sturdier and more resilient than its predecessors, so if you really have to throw it across the room – not that you should – it could still be okay.
The rumble in the DualShock 3 is a little bit milder than it used to be. This design saves a lot of battery power for the controller, so you’re not constantly running around the house looking for more batteries to stuff into your controller in the midst of a battle. This also means less expense on batteries and longer playtimes per sitting.
The DualShock 3 is definitely superior to the SixAxis controller that originally shipped with the PS3. Now that it has been released, too, there are very few reasons not to switch over to the DualShock 3. It even comes in a variety of colors: black, satin silver, ceramic white, classic white, metallic blue, deep red, pink, jungle green, candy blue, urban camouflage, and a few special colors designed for limited release with special editions, such as gun-metal gray, cloud black (which is kind of like charcoal), and a baseball-themed controller.
The DualShock 3 is, in our estimation, definitely worth your time. But think about it for yourself – better rumbling, longer battery life, and a wide selection to suit your preferences (or the preferences of another person, if you want to throw in a gift and play with someone else later).
